New approach dynamically orchestrates limited AC power across multiple chargers and vehicles, addressing the critical infrastructure challenge facing electrifying airports.
ZAPI GROUP, a global leader in electrification, introduced a new intelligent energy management capability for the ground support equipment (GSE) market. Developed through the combined expertise of group companies ZIVAN and Ubiquicom, the solution was previewed at GSE Expo Europe 2026, held from September 15 to 17 in Lisbon, Portugal.
As airports continued their transition to electric GSE fleets, the challenge was no longer how to charge vehicles individually, but how to intelligently manage the limited power available when multiple vehicles required charging simultaneously. Without coordination, concurrent charging demands quickly exceeded infrastructure limits, forcing operators to choose between costly electrical upgrades and reduced fleet availability.
To address this challenge, ZAPI GROUP introduced Dynamic AC Load Balancing (DALB). Powered by a Site Controller, DALB continuously monitored available power capacity and dynamically allocated energy across active chargers based on real-time demand. Rather than operating independently, chargers worked in coordination to maximize fleet availability and optimize existing AC infrastructure while remaining within grid constraints.
Beyond load management, the platform architecture supported first-in, first-out (FIFO) charging logic, data logging, analytics, remote diagnostics, asset traceability, and collision avoidance capabilities.
"The challenge airports faced was not charging individual vehicles, but intelligently managing limited energy across an entire fleet of chargers operating within a fixed power budget," said Claes Avasjo, Executive Director of ZAPI GROUP. "By combining ZIVAN's charging expertise with Ubiquicom's connectivity platform, we delivered a site-level management system that eliminated infrastructure bottlenecks and helped keep eGSE fleets operating at maximum efficiency."
